What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin shells of tooth-colored porcelain that are placed over the front facing surfaces of the teeth to cover aesthetic imperfections. The natural-looking, durable porcelain can be used to conceal a single damaged tooth or a mouthful of cosmetic flaws. Generally, dental veneers are used to address teeth that are chipped, gapped, misaligned, misshapen, stained, or undersized.

The Process of Getting Veneers

The first step of the process is your consultation. During this time, you will be able to discuss the goals that you have for your smile. Ultimately, it will help to determine whether or not this is the right cosmetic solution for you.

Once it is confirmed that you make a good candidate for the procedure, a small portion of enamel is removed from the front-facing surface of the teeth and an impression is made. This impression is then sent to a dental laboratory where your veneers will be crafted. In the meantime, you will be provided with temporary veneers to protect your smile and get you used to how your restoration will feel.

Once your veneers are ready, you can return to the practice where they will be adhered into placed. At this time, small adjustments can be made to give you a perfectly comfortable and natural-looking smile!

The Benefits of Veneers

Veneers have all sorts of benefits. Here are just some of the ones you can experience:

  • Stain-Resistant: Veneers are able to resist stains much better than your natural tooth enamel, so they can ultimately be used as a long-term whitening solution
  • Long-Lasting: When cared for properly, veneers can last upwards of 15 years.
  • Natural-Looking: Veneers are carefully placed so they appear perfectly natural. No one will be able to tell that they aren’t part of your natural teeth.
  • Custom-Made: Dental veneers are crafted to be the perfect size, shape, and color to blend in with the rest of your smile.

Veneer FAQs

Can Veneers Fix Crooked Teeth?

Actually, yes. In fact, veneers can fix minor crookedness, noticeable gaps, and even open bites. So, if you want a straighter smile and healthier bite without committing to 12+ months of orthodontic treatment, this may be the solution you’ve been looking for! The easiest way to find out is by scheduling a consultation with one of our talented cosmetic dentists. That way, they can learn about your smile goals, assess the severity of your misalignment, and determine if you’re a good candidate for veneers.

Are Veneers Permanent?

Although the treatment process is irreversible, veneers are not permanent. In other words, your teeth will always need to be covered with veneers or dental crowns moving forward. The good news is that your veneers should last for 10 years before needing to be replaced, and there are countless patients who have enjoyed theirs for 15+ years. The key is proper care and maintenance. That starts with daily habits, like brushing your teeth, and extends to good general habits, like coming to our office every six months for a checkup.

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?

While your temporary veneers are in place, you’ll need to stick to extremely soft foods, like seedless fruit smoothies, cottage cheese, and plain yogurt. Once your final ones are in place, you’ll be able to resume your usual diet – just make sure to avoid extremely crunchy and sticky foods! Although hard pretzels, taffy, peanut brittle, and similar snacks are delicious, they dramatically increase your risk of dental damage. That’s why we encourage our patients to stick to mostly healthy, well-balanced meals that aren’t loaded with added sugar.

Is There Anyone Who Shouldn’t Get Veneers?

There are some patients who aren’t candidates for veneers. At least, they aren’t candidates for veneers right away. For example, if you grind your teeth at night, there is an active infection in your gums, or your teeth are severely misaligned, then you won’t be eligible for veneers until we provide the necessary care – whether it’s gum disease therapy or orthodontic treatment.

Can I Drink Coffee with Veneers?

Since veneers are crafted from stain-resistant materials, like porcelain, you don’t have to stress about dental discoloration quickly surfacing. That said, not all of your teeth will be covered with veneers. So, if you want to maintain a bright, balanced, and beautiful smile, you still need to drink coffee the “smile-friendly” way. More specifically, we recommend using a straw, not adding sugar, and rinsing your mouth with water when you’re done.
