Frequently Asked Dental Questions – Chardon, OH

Everything You’ve Wanted
to Know About Dentistry

When should you schedule your next checkup? How urgent is losing a tooth? There is no end to the various questions that we receive from our patients every day, and we always embrace the chance to provide them with the answers they need. Please let us know if you have a question that is not answered below or elsewhere on our website; we love nothing more than the chance to help our valued patients learn more about dentistry and their overall oral health.

When should I get my regular checkup?

We recommend that every patient, regardless of age, return to our dental office once every six months at minimum in order to maintain optimal oral health. Taking such a preventive approach will go a long way towards protecting your overall wellbeing, and it will allow us to look for problems while they’re still in their earliest stages and thus easier and more affordable to treat.

How do I know if I have gum disease?

Gum disease usually develops silently, but it can sometimes result in bleeding, swelling, and gum discoloration. It can also eventually cause your teeth to feel loose. Untreated gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss, and the American Academy of Periodontology reports that patients with gum disease are more likely to suffer from heart problems. It may also be connected to strokes, diabetes, and even cancer.

Will a root canal help my toothache?

If a toothache is being caused by compromised dental pulp, then yes, root canal therapy will help you find relief. Dental pulp can become infected if your tooth is broken or if you have a cavity that goes untreated for too long. A root canal will stop the pain by removing the dental pulp altogether before cleaning out the tooth to make sure that there are no bacteria remaining.

Can I really get a permanent crown in a single dental office visit?

Thanks to the CEREC technology found at the Chardon Smile Center, absolutely! Digital impressions of your mouth can be used by our CEREC milling machine to make a dazzling ceramic restoration in about an hour. No longer will you have to worry about wearing an unreliable temporary crown while waiting for the permanent one.

Why do I need to replace my missing teeth?

Missing teeth aren’t just embarrassing. They actively interfere with your ability to eat or speak, and they can potentially increase your risk for gum disease and other oral health issues. Here at the Chardon Smile Center, we can make your smile whole again with one of several beautiful, durable tooth replacement options.

Are porcelain veneers a good option to cosmetically enhance my smile?

The best cosmetic treatment will vary from person to person, but in many cases porcelain veneers are indeed an excellent option. They can be used to hide cracks, chips, gaps, and stains, and they’re reliable for covering broken and misshapen teeth as well. It will take just two visits for us to create a new smile for you with porcelain veneers.
