Now that the summer months are here, you’re probably itching to get some good old sunshine. It’s the perfect time to get a tan by the pool or beach. Plus, the outdoor air and scenery will do you good. However, those aren’t the only reasons you should consider getting some rays. Did you know the summer sun can boost your oral health too?

Here’s a summary of three major ways sunlight improves your smile. Learn about them and decide whether your pearly whites could use the sun.

The Summer Sun’s Oral Health Benefits

As you may already know, exposure to sunlight increases one’s vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is known for its positive role in many body functions, mainly how it strengthens bones.

More research has confirmed that the increased vitamin D from sunlight helps your teeth and gums too. Most importantly, it can do things like:

  • : The body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium from food and other nutrition properly. In doing so, it helps strengthen our bones — including all teeth!
  • : Several studies suggest that vitamin D helps prevent tooth decay. Researchers have even shown that the former can lower the latter’s risk by 50%!
  • : Vitamin D also supports the immune system, helping it function properly. In particular, it works to protect us from germs, viruses, and infections.

Of course, too much sun can have adverse effects like sunburns and an increased risk of skin cancer. To get the ideal amount of vitamin D, try to receive between 5 to 30 minutes’ worth of sunshine daily.

Other Sources of Vitamin D

Sometimes you might feel that summer temperatures are too high. On the other hand, maybe you want to avoid the risks of over-exposure to the sun. Either way, there will be times when you can’t get outside for sunlight.

Still, you can always elevate your vitamin D levels by eating the right foods. Some reliable sources are fish like salmon or tuna, eggs, milk, fortified cereal, orange juice, or yogurt.

The summer sun can often look beautiful in the proper settings. It’s only fitting that it offers benefits like those above to give you a healthier, prettier smile.
